What to Expect in Your First EMDR Session
Starting EMDR can feel like a leap. You may be wondering what you will have to say, whether you will cry, or whether you will be asked to relive the worst moments of your life right away. The short answer to that last one is no. Here is what actually happens in your first sessions.
You Will Not Start With the Hard Stuff
Your first session is mostly a conversation. Your therapist will ask about what brought you in, what you want to change, and a bit about your history. You decide how much to share. Nothing is rushed, and you will not be pushed into memories before you are ready.
The First Few Sessions: Building a Foundation
EMDR has eight phases, and the early ones are about getting ready. Your therapist will:
- Get to know you. Your history, your goals and what you are dealing with right now.
- Teach you coping tools. Grounding, calming breaths and a “safe place” exercise you can use anytime.
- Explain how EMDR works. You will know what to expect before anything starts.
- Make a plan. Together you pick what to work on and in what order.
For many people, this stage takes several sessions, sometimes a few months. That is normal and it is an important part of the work.
What the First Processing Session Feels Like
When you are ready, your therapist will guide you to briefly focus on a memory while using eye movements, tapping or tones. You are always awake, in control, and able to stop. You may notice thoughts, feelings, images or body sensations come up and shift. Some people feel tired afterward, and some feel lighter. Both are normal.
Common Questions
- Do I have to tell the whole story? No. You do not need to share every detail for EMDR to work.
- Will I cry? Maybe. Emotion is okay, and your therapist will help you stay steady.
- Is it hypnosis? No. You are fully aware the whole time.
- What if I get overwhelmed? We pause, ground and slow down. You set the pace.
How to Get the Most From Your First Session
Come as you are. Wear something comfortable, drink some water, and give yourself a quiet few minutes afterward. Write down any questions beforehand so you remember to ask them.
What Happens Between Sessions
The work does not stop when you leave. After EMDR, you may notice dreams, memories or feelings come up over the next day or two. That is your brain continuing to process. Your therapist will give you tools for this, such as grounding and a way to jot down what you notice, so it feels manageable. You can also share it at your next session.
How Long Until I Feel Better?
Everyone is different. Some people feel relief in a few weeks, while for others the deeper work takes months. Many people notice small changes first, like sleeping better, feeling less on edge or having a little more space before they react. Your therapist will check in with you regularly, so you always know where you are.
Is It Right for Me?
EMDR helps with trauma, anxiety, grief, phobias and more, but it is not the only way to heal. Your therapist will help you decide if it fits your goals, your history and where you are right now. If it is not the right time, there are other ways to build a foundation first.
