Online vs. In-Person EMDR: Which Is Right for You?
If you are thinking about EMDR, one of the first choices is where to do it. Some people want to sit in an office with their therapist. Others would rather stay home and log in from the couch. The good news is that both options work, and the right one is the one you will stick with.
Does EMDR Work Online?
Yes. EMDR can be done through a secure video session. Instead of following a light bar or the therapist’s hand, your therapist can guide eye movements on screen, or you can use tapping, such as the butterfly hug, or tones through headphones. Research and clinical practice have shown that online EMDR can be effective, and many clients do very well with it.
Benefits of Online EMDR
- Comfort. You are in your own space, which can help you feel safe.
- No commute. It is easier to fit in around work and family.
- Access. You can see a therapist from anywhere in Michigan.
- Privacy. You can start from home, which helps if leaving the house is hard.
Benefits of In-Person EMDR
- Presence. Some people feel more grounded with their therapist in the room.
- Fewer distractions. A quiet office gives you a clear break from home life.
- Easier to read each other. Your therapist can see your whole body language.
- A fresh start. Leaving the session behind when you walk out can help some people reset.
Things to Plan for at Home
If you choose online sessions, set yourself up well: find a private spot, use headphones, have water and a blanket nearby, and plan a quiet few minutes after the session instead of jumping right back into work. If your home is not private or feels unsafe, in-person may be a better fit.
Which One Should You Choose?
Ask yourself where you feel safest and where you can show up consistently. Some of our clients start in the office, then move online. Others do the reverse. Your therapist can help you talk it through and adjust along the way.
What Stays the Same Online
The heart of EMDR does not change. You still go through the same eight phases, you still build coping skills first, and you still go at your own pace. Your therapist is still there with you the whole time, guiding you, checking in and helping you close each session so you leave feeling steady.
Safety When You Are at Home
Before online EMDR starts, your therapist will talk with you about a plan: what to do if you feel overwhelmed, who to call if you need support, and how to get grounded before you log off. This is part of every session, whether you are in the office or at home, and it is what keeps the work safe.
Can I Switch Back and Forth?
Yes. Many clients do. Some come in for harder sessions and do check-ins online, or use video during busy weeks, travel or bad weather. Being flexible means you can keep going even when life gets in the way, and consistency is one of the best things you can give yourself in therapy.
